SEG Self Insurer Workers’ Compensation Fund: Board Member Orientation

Welcome

We provide innovative insurance solutions to meet the unique demands of Michigan public schools. That was our mission almost 50 years ago, and it still rings true today. We are a trusted partner to our members, offering comprehensive and affordable employee benefits and consulting services as well as property/casualty and workers’ compensation programs designed to protect our member school districts.

Company Overview

School Employers Trust (SET) is a non-profit company that was created after a monumental shift in school funding happened in 1965. SET, which began in 1971, served as an employee benefits association focused on offering comprehensive and affordable employee benefit solutions to Michigan public schools and their employees. Two years later, its partner organization School Employers Group (SEG) was formed to administer compensation and fringe benefits for SET. As schools were faced with more challenges related to insurance, SEG evolved and grew into a company that provides workers’ compensation and property/casualty services for Michigan public schools.

The SEG Self-Insurer Workers’ Compensation Fund is a member-owned, member-driven fund located in Michigan to serve the needs of Michigan’s public education community. The Fund has provided its members with high-quality, personalized and cost-effective insurance programs for more than 30 years. Today, SET SEG continues to expand and find innovative ways to meet the specialized needs of its members.

Traction: Implementing a new model for success

In 2019, SET SEG and its governing boards began to research, plan, and implement the Entrepreneurial Operating System®, a practical method for achieving business success. The book Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business, explores this model based on years of real-world implementation, identifying simple yet powerful ways to run a company that provides the leadership team with more opportunities for focus and growth. Using the book as a tool, our boards and leadership team have been focusing on six key components — vision, people, data, issues, process, traction — to develop a shared vision that supports three core values:

  1. We put schools first
  2. We are a team
  3. We simplify the complex

Every day, SET SEG’s staff, leadership team, and boards work with these core values in mind, maintaining our position as an industry leader in the school insurance market by putting our members first.
